Tuula Anttonen

Tuula Anttonen (born 1970 in Raahe, Finland) has graduated from Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Bourges, France, and from University of Industrial Arts in Helsinki, Finland. Anttonen works in Helsinki.

In recent works physicality is the main theme both in the figures represented and in the way paint is used. Lonely torsos raise existential questions whereas group scenes tell about social human behaviour.

Anttonen deals with questions of individual autonomy, the limits of care, dependence, and power struggles in a community.

This way of creating people, in a sense, constructively, avoiding showing their faces, makes her figures a bit mechanical: human prototypes.

As a consequence, a sufficient distance - or alienation - is created for stating hypotheses about fellow human beings.
